The Horseshoe Crab Recovery Coalition (HCRC) is dedicated to ensuring the future of the American Horseshoe Crab. Horseshoe crabs and the species that depend on them are in a crisis for their survival. Years of overharvest for bait and biomedical bleeding are twin threats facing this iconic species. The bait harvest needs reform, and bleeding phased out in favor of a safe synthetic alternative that is already in use. We are a science based campaign that aims to stem years of decline in horseshoe crab populations and fully restore them by 2030.
The adversities facing horseshoe crabs are vast, and as a result we must be bold in our response. Through the HCRC, we ask that conservation and citizen action groups stand up to offer a new direction in management to bring horseshoe crabs back to the level that existed before the overharvest began.
